Tackling the Kitchen Utensils

Ah, the kitchen drawer... so full of useful items, so often a complete mess! My kitchen utensil drawers were mildly organized at one time, probably 3 years ago when we first moved into our current home. Recently every time I went looking for the pizza cutter or the vegetable peeler, I thought "I've really got to do something about this!"

YIKES!! I didn't realize how bad it was until I took this picture!

Then The Daily Grommet, an online marketplace of fresh new products, posted a video (see it here) about a great drawer organizer called DrawerDecor. The DrawerDecor website describes the product as "the world's first infinetly customizable drawer organizing system." After watching the video and checking out the website I decided that I HAD to try it for myself (and my kitchen drawers).

I ordered the Starter Kit that comes with a 14" x 20" silicone basemat, 5 large divitz, 5 small divitz and 5 T Divitz. The kits come in great fun colors too - red (which I ordered), sky blue, iris, tangerine and lime.

Love the caption on the label - "Smiling? Getting boxes in the mail makes us happy too. ;-)"

After doing the happy dance upon opening my DrawerDecor box, I got to work. I removed all the utensils from the 2 drawers I was going to tackle. I cleaned the drawers and started paring down my utensils. I mean the Mickey Mouse Pancake form is very cute, but even my husband who is a master pancake maker couldn't make it work well. I ended up getting rid of quite a lot of items that were broken, unusable or duplicates.

Next I trimmed the basemat to fit in the smaller of my two drawers. It is a slightly sticky silicone sheet that was very easy to cut to the correct size. Now the fun part began! I laid my most frequently used utensils on the basemat until I had a pleasing configuration. Then I added the divitz which hold the items in place (as does the stickiness of the basemat).

AFTER - Smaller Drawer - Utensil Heaven!!!!

The finishing touch was to label where each item goes. This will help hubby and the kids (and Mom when she visits) to return things to their homes.
Labels make everything better!

Here's the bigger drawer. I didn't use the DrawerDecor in there yet! But I recycled some drawer organizers from the smaller drawer to help in the process.

AFTER - Large Utensil Drawer - a definite improvement!
So needless to say I love the DrawerDecor kit. I think it will make a huge difference in the functionality of my kitchen. Even an organizer can use a little help sometimes!
